Today, you discovered the soft skin of the newly fallen acorn.
You had always wondered at the treasures
our son picked up on our walks
And today, when he handed you one of the acorns
You turned to me and asked me to feel it too.

Such softness, such newness, such life
as summer comes to an end
Would shock anyone.

He knew, though, just as he always does
What to hold onto and what to let fall.
