Today I tried to teach you
all about the comfort offered
by lying on the summer sun warmed asphalt
of a basketball court.
What I saw when I looked at you was pity.
I’ve seen it before.
It is in these moments
I know I’ve given away a secret
I did not know I was keeping.
It is times like this
I know it is wrong to show
the places I sought comfort.
That these hard places-
warmed by sun or not-
were terrible substitutes
for the love I could not find at home.
