When I asked my students
what they would most want to see
if they could be transported
twenty five years into the future
they astounded me with their hope
for a world we have set on fire.
They hope for a world
that does not storm and fracture-
the way it has throughout their lives.
They hope for a world
where their children
will not have to practice for the next shooting-
that shootings will not be an inevitable outcome
even more than learning.
They hope for a world less divided-
where that which separates them
is not more important than that which brings them closer.
They did not hope for wealth.
They did not hope for fame.
They did not hope for themselves.
They hope for a better world
they hope for all of us.
