Purple Flowers in Spring

~for Wendy

The other day I noticed the trees
that were blooming with purple flowers-
so vibrant against that spring sky.
They are not the same flowers I saw-
the flashes of color in the fall
that lit up the rainy afternoon
I learned my brother had died.

No, these are different
but now they belong to your mother.
I heard that same bright day
I noticed the flowers
that she was dead.
Suddenly the flowers take on
an entirely different shape and meaning-
suddenly they are hers.

I want you to know
I understand this is hard.
That people will not understand why
you are silent or crying or smiling.
Or why,
every spring,
you feel sad when you see those purple flowers bloom,
but I will.
