Sisters Now Mothers

We share a childhood,
the color of our hair,
and the shape of our smiles,
but the one thing that we share
that surprised even us
is our inability to allow our children to feel pain.

We hear them cry and,
even if we try,
we cannot not go to them.

I was the first one of us to have a child
and when he would cry
it would shatter me.
My sisters followed
with their own children
and their own fracturing.

We lift them up,
wipe their faces,
and whisper comfort in their small ears.
With this, we put our hearts back together
and tell ourselves we have succeeded
for one more day.
