Independence Day

Tonight, while lighting bugs
lit up the bottom of our shrubs
and the fire burned itself out
I fell in love with you
and our daughter
as smoke wrapped its way around
your arms
and hands
and fingers
and you held her there
the one light
the hope for tomorrow
between you
and you whispered and then,
in the distance there was rumbling
like thunder
but it was fireworks
and you walked her over
to see what you could see
and it was then and there
that I knew
why we did it.

This is our independence day.
Today we celebrate like we are going to war
but really we are just coming home and,
when you think it’s a firework
in our hand
it is just a lightning bug
and the smoke from a dying fire.
