Prayer for the Dead

Fiona says that when she pictures you
she pictures the little boy we all knew,
skinny and full of energy and light,
long before the delusions and drugs
wrapped up your mind.
Long before you became invisible
beneath all that you were fighting.

She says she finds peace
by thinking you are with mom,
who also had so much pain toward the end.
That the two of you are finally free and happy
somewhere together.

It’s a whispered prayer
the moment she says it out loud-
a waking dream for those of us still here-
hurting, together.
