Summer Evening

I’m writing this poem
to press this evening
into my memory
like a flower into pages of a book.
The hum of the cicadas,
the chatter of our neighbors kids,
the breeze with a breath of fall underneath,
the light shining through bright white clouds
onto lush green leaves-
making shadows on the sun warmed sidewalk.
Somewhere a dog is barking.
Somewhere an ice cream truck is playing music.

Somehow I know I will need this memory
when the days get cold
and the light does not last.

When that happens
and I have forgotten all the warmth from summer,
read this to me and remind of tonight.
Remind me that the cicadas will hum again
in leaves that have yet to be grown.
