You saw the shadow first
and could not understand
what it was that was gliding over
the long ocean-like waves of grass.
Coasting across the surface,
this patch of darkness
like a ship on the surface
or a shark just beneath.
Slowly, as the shape crossed the field
it crossed your mind to look up.
You noticed the same shape in a cloud
drawn across the endless sea of blue sky.
What you saw that day
was simply the earth reflecting the sky
a power that, up until now,
you thought was only held by the ocean.
