Their prompt: Write a poem that tells a lie. Here goes:
Lying to My Son
“There is nothing to be afraid of.”
I tell him and know that this is not true.
I do not want to be like my mother,
arming us, her children,
with knowledge in order to protect us.
She would say, “You are not afraid of the dark,
you are afraid of what’s in the dark.”
No, I don’t want to be like that
and make him afraid of a world
that is more scary than his young mind can comprehend
so I lie to him.
I know he will be hurt
and will have to go through things
I cannot shield him from.
And when he does get hurt,
when the pain does find him,
I will lie again and tell him
he will be okay.
