Holding Up a Looking Glass

I remember you:
hair flying, as you ran from monsters both real and pretend.
I knew at some point you would stop running.
You stepped toward the darkness while I stayed behind, trembling.
Now, when you think of yourself,
all you see is the little girl lost in the spidery black woods.
But when I look at you –
older, tamed hair, no longer breathless – all I see is courage.
All I see is the line of dragons you slayed,
the evil you fought, the darkness you lit.
