Before I Hugged You Goodbye

~for Fiona

Before I hugged you goodbye
to send you back to your life that
takes place too far away from mine
a moth flew out from between our two cars.

It came between us too-
and the way its powder white wings
were caught in the false light of the parking lot
startled us both enough
that we stepped back from each other.

You said it was our mom,
coming for a visit,
and I smiled.

We both watched it fly into the warm night air-
leaving us in the same way we were leaving each other-
too quickly to be sad about it going
and touched that it stayed with us
for even a moment.
