My sweet, you are catching lightning bugs
with our daughter on this summer evening
and it’s like you are holding stars in your hands
for our little girl to see.
I love the way summer brings
these beautiful constellations down
for a moment so brief-
their pattern changing so fast
the story they tells is transforming
more quickly than she is.
I know I will think of this night
and the way your lovely faces
are lit by them and
the way you both turn to look at me
as the one you’ve caught flies away
to tell another story.
