The Present

She knows today is a special day
and so she sets herself on my lap-
the very weight of her
the best she can do to add gravity
to this day.

And I look at her small body,
one I used to wash and know every inch of,
and it suddenly seems to have
unfamiliar freckles and marks.
And even though she tucks herself in to me,
curling up just right,
I feel her getting bigger.

I love the way
she turns to look at me and smile
as she grabs a strawberry from her bowl.
The sweetness of it lingering on her fingers
for a longer time than it takes
for me to capture this moment in words.
