Tonight, my son
who is standing on the cliff of adolescences,
knocked on my door and said
“it’s raining, come smell the air with me.”

In this one sentence
he became everything I am
and everything I always hoped he would be.
He led me through our dark house,
flipped the lock and opened the door
to the rainy night.

We took turns breathing deeply,
the air tonight-
he held his hand out to the rain-
palm up as if greeting the sky.

Oh, my beautiful boy,
may you always find joy in the simply things
like you did tonight
under a rain soaked porch
with a smile and
hand held to the sky.
